Emilio Ángel Sánchez Vicario (born 29 May 1965) is a famous Spanish former tennis player. He was once ranked world No. 1 in doubles! Emilio won five major Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles. He also earned a silver medal in men's doubles at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
Emilio is the older brother of Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, who also won many Grand Slam titles. They even teamed up to win the Hopman Cup together in 1990. After he stopped playing professionally, Emilio became the captain of Spain's Davis Cup team and led them to victory in 2008.

Emilio Sánchez's Tennis Career
Emilio Sánchez started his professional tennis journey in 1984. He quickly showed his talent, winning his first big singles title in Nice, France, in 1986. Throughout his career, he won 15 singles titles, including the important Italian Open in 1991.
Playing Against Top Stars
Emilio was a strong singles player. He managed to beat some of the biggest names in tennis. These included Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker, and Mats Wilander. His highest singles ranking was world No. 7, which is a fantastic achievement!
Doubles Success and Grand Slams
Emilio Sánchez was especially amazing in men's doubles. He won a total of 50 doubles titles! He often played with his partner Sergio Casal, winning 44 titles together. They were a very successful team.
In 1988, Emilio won two Grand Slam doubles titles:
- The French Open with Andrés Gómez.
- The US Open with Sergio Casal.
He won the French Open again in 1990, also with Sergio Casal. Emilio and Sergio also reached the finals at Wimbledon in 1987. They proudly won the silver medal for Spain at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Because of his incredible doubles success, Emilio Sánchez became the world No. 1 in men's doubles in 1989.

Emilio also excelled in mixed doubles, where a male and female player team up. In 1987, he won two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles:

Leading the Spanish Davis Cup Team
Emilio was the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team for three years. His time as captain ended with a big success: Spain won the Davis Cup in 2008! After this victory, he stepped down as captain.
Other Contributions to Tennis
In 2009, Emilio worked with the Brazilian tennis federation to help organize and improve tennis in Brazil. He also directed two wheelchair tennis events in 2012, showing his support for all forms of the sport.
In 2017, the ITF gave Emilio Sánchez their highest award, the Philippe Chatrier Award. This award recognized his many great contributions to tennis over the years.

Emilio Sánchez was born in Madrid, Spain. His parents are Emilio Sánchez Snr and Marisa Vicario Rubin. It was his mother, Marisa, who first introduced Emilio and his siblings to tennis.
Besides his famous siblings Arantxa and Javier, Emilio also has an older sister named Marisa Sánchez Vicario. She also played professional tennis for a short time.
In 1999, Emilio married his wife, Simona, who is from Italy. They have four children together.
