Andrés Gómez Santos was born on February 27, 1960. He is a famous former professional tennis player from Ecuador. He was one of the best tennis players in the world! He reached a high ranking of world No. 4 in singles. He was even the world No. 1 in doubles.
Andrés Gómez won many titles during his career. He won 21 singles titles and 33 doubles titles. His biggest win was a singles major at the 1990 French Open. He also won two doubles majors. These were at the 1986 US Open and the 1988 French Open.
Andrés Gómez comes from a tennis family. His son, Emilio Gómez, is also a professional tennis player. His nephew Nicolás Lapentti was a professional player too. Nicolás reached a world ranking of No. 6. Another nephew, Roberto Quiroz, is also a professional tennis player.

Andrés Gómez's Tennis Journey
Andrés Gómez started his professional tennis career in 1979. At first, he was very successful in doubles matches. He won five doubles titles in 1980. Then he won seven more in 1981.
Becoming World No. 1 in Doubles
In 1986, Andrés Gómez became the world's top-ranked doubles player. That year, he won seven doubles tournaments. One of his biggest wins was the US Open men's doubles title. He played with his partner, Slobodan Živojinović.
He won another major doubles title in 1988. This was at the French Open. His partner for this win was Emilio Sánchez.
Winning Singles Titles
Andrés Gómez won his first big singles title in 1981 in Bordeaux, France. He then won the Italian Open in 1982. He beat Eliot Teltscher in the final. He won the Italian Open again in 1984. This time, he defeated Aaron Krickstein.
His Biggest Singles Win: The French Open
In 1990, Andrés Gómez reached his first and only Grand Slam singles final. This was at the French Open. To get to the final, he beat many strong players. These included Fernando Luna and Thomas Muster.
