Andrea Joan Caron Lynch (born November 24, 1952) is a British former track and field athlete. She was a very fast runner, known as a sprinter, mainly competing in the 100 metres race. Andrea was an Olympian twice, meaning she competed in the Olympic Games.

One of the best moments in her career was winning a bronze medal in the 100 m race at the 1974 European Athletics Championships. She also won two silver medals at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in the 100 m and the 4 × 100 metres relay race.

Andrea Lynch once held the British record for the 100 m. Her fastest hand-timed 100 m was 10.9 seconds in 1974. Her best time using an automatic timer was 11.16 seconds in 1975. She also ran the 200 metres, with her best time being 23.15 seconds in 1975.

Andrea's Athletics Journey

Andrea was born in Barbados. When she was young, her family moved to England. She first thought about representing Barbados in the 1970 British Commonwealth Games. However, she decided to compete for Britain when she didn't hear back from Barbados.

She quickly showed she was a talented young sprinter for Britain.

  • In 1970, she won the 100 m race at the English Schools' Athletics Championships.
  • In 1971, she won the 200 m race at the same championships.
  • She also won the 100 m at the 1970 British Schools International Match.
  • Her first big medal was a silver in the 100 m at the 1970 European Athletics Junior Championships. She finished just behind Helena Kerner from Poland.

Indoor Successes

In 1974, Andrea equalled the world record for the 60 metres indoor race, running it in 7.2 seconds. She had great success in this indoor event.

  • She won the gold medal at the 1975 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
  • Before that, she had won a silver medal at the same competition in 1974.

Olympic Appearances

Andrea represented Great Britain at the Olympics twice.

  • In 1972, as a teenager, she reached the semi-finals in the 100 m. She also finished seventh in the 4 × 100 metres relay race.
  • Four years later, in 1976, she made it to the Olympic 100 metres final and placed seventh. She also reached the relay final again.

Later Career Highlights

In 1975, Andrea was the runner-up to Renate Stecher at the European Cup. She won her last major individual medals at the 1977 Universiade. There, she earned a silver in the 100 m and a bronze in the 200 m.

Her only global medal came with the European relay team at the 1977 IAAF World Cup. She teamed up with fellow British runner Sonia Lannaman and German athletes Annegret Richter and Elvira Possekel. Together, they won the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay.

National Championships

Andrea also won many national titles in Britain:

  • She won three 100 m titles at the AAA Championships (1973, 1975, and 1976).
  • She won three 60 m titles at the AAA Indoor Championships (1973, 1975, and 1976).
  • In 1977, she was second in both the 100 m and 200 m at the first 1977 UK Athletics Championships, finishing behind Sonia Lannaman.
  • She also competed as a guest at the Scottish Athletics Championships in 1972, winning both short sprint races.

After Competing

After she stopped competing in athletics, Andrea stayed involved in the sport. She became a sprint coach, helping young athletes like Kyle Reynolds-Warmington at Belgrave Harriers.

Andrea was previously married to Canadian Olympic sprinter Brian Saunders.
