About Andrés Alcántara
Andrés Alcántara grew up in Torredelcampo, a town in Jaén, Spain. From a young age, he loved to create. He started sculpting in workshops that worked with wood and stone. Later, he studied at the College of Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid. He also attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. These schools helped him learn many different art techniques.
His Artworks
Andrés Alcántara is famous for his unique artistic style. He works with various materials and forms to express his ideas.
Sculpting Style
Alcántara is one of the few Spanish sculptors who still uses "direct carving." This means he carves directly into the material, like stone or wood, without making a model first. It takes a lot of skill and vision! His early sculptures were very expressive. Over time, his style changed to a more "primitivist" look. This means his art became simpler and more natural, often inspired by ancient art. He also started using more different symbols and images in his work.
Painting and Engraving
Besides sculpting, Alcántara is also a skilled engraver and painter. Engraving is a special way of making prints by carving designs into a surface. One famous example of his painting and engraving work was an exhibition called "Cervantes and Don Quixote." This show featured portraits related to the famous book Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. It was held in 2005 to celebrate 400 years since the book was published.
Exhibitions Around the World
Andrés Alcántara's art has been shown in many places. He has had solo exhibitions, which means only his art was on display. These shows were mainly in Spain, France, Portugal, and China. He has also been part of many group exhibitions. In these shows, his work was displayed alongside other artists. His art has traveled to big cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, and Shanghai. Some famous places where his art has been shown include the Cuartel del Conde-Duque in Madrid and the Shanghai Sculpture Space in China.
