Understanding Languages: Linguistics
Most of Professor Carnie's research is in a field called linguistics. Linguistics is the scientific study of language. He focuses on three main areas:
- Syntax: This is about how words are put together to form sentences and phrases. It's like the grammar rules of a language.
- Morphology: This looks at how words are formed, like how prefixes and suffixes change a word's meaning.
- Phonology: This is the study of how sounds are organized and used in a language.
He mostly studies the Celtic languages, especially Irish and Scottish Gaelic.
