Andrew Carnie, born on April 19, 1969, is a Canadian professor. He teaches about languages at the University of Arizona. He has written or helped write many books and articles. These works focus on how language is structured, especially Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic. Professor Carnie was born in Calgary, Alberta. He also teaches Balkan and international folk dance. From 2010 to 2012, he was a director for graduate programs at the University of Arizona. In August 2012, he became the interim Dean of the graduate college. From 2013 to 2022, he served as the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate College. In this role, he started the university's Graduate Center. He also helped increase student diversity and worked to improve conditions and pay for students.

Understanding Linguistics

Professor Carnie's main work is in linguistics. This is the scientific study of language. He focuses on three main areas:

  • Syntax: This is about how words are put together to form sentences. It's like the grammar rules of a language.
