Thesis The relationship between spontaneous and evoked release of transmitter substances (1974)

Andrew Charles Crawford (born in 1949) is a British neuroscientist. This means he is a scientist who studies the brain and the nervous system. He is a professor at the University of Cambridge, where he teaches and does research. He is also a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, which is a special honor at the university.

What Andrew Crawford Studied

Andrew Crawford went to school at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys in Birmingham. Later, he studied at Downing College, Cambridge. In 1970, he earned his first university degree, called a Bachelor of Arts. He then continued his studies at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and received his PhD in 1974. A PhD is a very advanced degree that shows someone is an expert in their field.

His Research and Discoveries

Professor Crawford is well-known for his work on how living things hear. He has studied the process of hearing in animals with backbones, called vertebrates.

In 1976, he worked with another scientist, Robert Fettiplace. They found a way to record the tiny electrical signals from special cells in the ear. These cells are called hair cells and they are found in the cochlea, which is a part of the inner ear. Their research helped us understand how these cells turn sounds into signals the brain can understand.

He has also done important research on how nerves talk to muscles. This process is called neuromuscular transmission. He studied this in animals like frogs and crabs. His work helps us understand how our bodies move.

Awards and Special Honors

In 1990, Andrew Crawford was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honor for scientists in the United Kingdom. It means he is recognized as one of the top scientists in his field.
