Andrew Charles Lang Jr. (born June 28, 1966) is a former American professional basketball player. He played for twelve seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Andrew Lang's Basketball Journey
Andrew Lang played basketball for four years at the University of Arkansas. After college, he was chosen by the Phoenix Suns in the 1988 NBA draft. He was picked in the second round, as the 28th player overall.
Lang quickly became known as a great shotblocker. A shotblocker is a player who stops the opposing team from scoring by swatting the ball away as it heads toward the basket. For many years, he held an impressive record: he blocked a shot every 9.12 minutes he played, which was the fourth best in NBA history at the time.
In 1992, Lang had his best season, starting 71 games. He averaged 6.7 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. After this great season, he was traded from the Suns to the Philadelphia 76ers. This trade involved him, Jeff Hornacek, and Tim Perry going to Philadelphia in exchange for the famous player Charles Barkley.
Andrew Lang played for several different teams during his career. A player who plays for many teams is sometimes called a "journeyman." He also played for the Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, and New York Knicks. He retired from basketball in 2000. By the end of his career, he had averaged 6.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.5 blocked shots per game. He is ranked as the 55th best shot blocker in NBA history.
While playing for the Milwaukee Bucks in 1997, Lang was involved in an incident with Knicks star center Patrick Ewing. During a game, Lang and Ewing collided in mid-air. Ewing fell and injured his wrist. The Bucks won that game. Ewing was out of play for a while and did not return until the second round of the playoffs. After that injury, Ewing never quite played at the same All-Star level again. Later in his career, Lang actually signed with the New York Knicks to be Ewing's backup player.
Andrew Lang's Life Off the Court
Outside of basketball, Andrew Lang is a Christian evangelist. An evangelist is someone who shares their religious beliefs with others. He currently works for the Atlanta Hawks as the team chaplain. A chaplain is a spiritual leader or advisor for a group, like a sports team.
Lang lives in Marietta, Georgia with his wife, Bronwyn. His son, Trey, played college basketball for the UMass Minutemen. His other son, Chad, also played college basketball for the Belmont Bruins and the Lipscomb Bisons.
