Sir Andrew Stewart Mackenzie (born 20 December 1956) is a Scottish businessman. He is currently the chairman of Shell plc. Before that, he was the CEO of BHP, which is one of the world's biggest mining companies.
Early Life and Education
Andrew Stewart Mackenzie was born in December 1956. He grew up in Kirkintilloch, Scotland. He went to the University of St Andrews and earned a top degree in geology in 1977. Later, he studied at the University of Bristol. There, he received a PhD in organic chemistry in 1981.
Career Highlights
After his studies, Mackenzie worked as a scientist. He was a research fellow with the British Geological Society. He also worked at the Nuclear Research Centre in Germany. As a scientist, he wrote more than 50 research papers.
In 1983, Mackenzie joined BP, a large energy company. He started in their research division. Over time, he moved into finance and became a senior leader. He worked at BP for 22 years.
In 2004, Mackenzie joined Rio Tinto, another big mining company. He became the chief executive of different parts of the company. These included industrial minerals and later diamonds.
In 2007, he moved to BHP, which is the world's largest mining company. He became the chief executive of their non-ferrous metals division. In May 2013, he became the CEO of BHP. He led the company until the start of 2020.

In 2014, Mackenzie was made a fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very important honor for scientists. The Royal Society recognized him as one of the world's most important applied earth scientists. They noted his early work on how oil forms. They also praised his leadership in the energy and mining industries.
Mackenzie was made a knight in 2020. This honor was for his contributions to business, science, technology, and the relationship between the UK and Australia.
