Andy Creeggan's Musical Journey
Joining Barenaked Ladies
Andy Creeggan was born in Scarborough, Ontario, which is a part of Toronto. He and his brother Jim Creeggan were invited to play with Ed Robertson and Steven Page. At that time, Ed and Steven were performing as a duo called Barenaked Ladies. Andy played conga drums at their Christmas show in Toronto. After that, both brothers were asked to join the band.
Just six months later, in the summer of 1990, Andy joined a program called Canada World Youth. This program took him on a trip to South America. While he was away, the band met a drummer named Tyler Stewart. They invited Tyler to join Barenaked Ladies.
When Andy came back in early 1991, Tyler had taken over the percussion role. So, Andy switched to playing keyboards. He still played congas on some songs and also used other instruments. He helped create two of the band's early demo tapes. These were Barenaked Lunch (before his trip) and The Yellow Tape (after he returned). Andy also played on the band's first two official albums: Gordon and Maybe You Should Drive.
Leaving Barenaked Ladies
Andy was not always comfortable being in the band. He wanted to continue learning about other types of music. He explained that he wanted space for his own music and ideas. He was very interested in instrumental music. He had been accepted into the Faculty of Music at McGill University in Montreal. He wanted to study music theory and composition there.
According to Steven Page, Andy thought about leaving the band even before they recorded their second album. But he was convinced to stay for the recording and the tour that followed. Andy left the band after that tour ended. The remaining members recorded their third album, Born on a Pirate Ship, as a group of four. They then asked Kevin Hearn to join them for the tour in 1996.
The Brothers Creeggan
Andy and Jim Creeggan also had their own ideas for songs. Most of the Barenaked Ladies' music came from Steven Page and Ed Robertson. In 1994, the Creeggan brothers released their own album called The Brothers Creeggan.
Since then, they have released three more albums: The Brothers Creeggan II (1997), Trunks (2000), and Sleepyhead (2002). They also went on tours to support these albums. Their music often mixes rock and jazz styles. The duo has not been active since 2003.
Solo Music: Andiwork Series
Andy Creeggan has also created four solo albums. These albums are called Andiwork (1997), Andiwork II (2004), Andiwork III (2011), and Andiwork IV (2021). His solo music sounds more like modern classical music. It also has touches of jazz and rock. Most of the songs on these albums are instrumental, meaning they do not have singing.
