About Angela Grauerholz

Angela Grauerholz was born in Hamburg, Germany. She studied graphic design there. She also learned about literature and languages at the University of Hamburg.

In 1976, Angela moved to Canada. She received a special grant to study photography. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University.

During the 1980s, she ran her own design studio. She created designs for magazines, catalogs, and books. In 1988, she started teaching graphic design. This was at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Later, she became the director of the Centre of Design there. She is now a Professor Emerita, which means she is a retired professor who still holds her title.

Angela helped start the Artexte Information Centre in 1980. This center collects information about art. She has also made digital copies of her own art. She also digitized her personal collection of images from newspapers. Her art is shown in galleries in major cities. These include Montreal, Toronto, Berlin, and Paris.

Her Unique Art Style

Angela Grauerholz's photographs have a special look. They often appear a bit hazy or blurry. She creates this effect using long exposures. This means the camera's shutter stays open for a longer time. She also sometimes layers images on top of each other.

Her photos often show everyday things. But because of her style, they feel timeless. It's like they could be from any era. Angela likes to try new things in her art. She has used multiple images and even sculptures in her art installations. An installation is a type of art that uses a whole space.

Later in her career, Angela explored new ideas. She looked at feelings and the passing of time. She often creates a series of images instead of just one picture. For example, she photographed 16 important women in the Montreal art scene. She often breaks traditional photography rules. This helps her create unique and artistic portraits.
