Life Story
Angela Hitler was born in Braunau, Austria-Hungary. She was the second child of Alois Hitler Sr. and his second wife, Franziska Matzelsberger. Her mother passed away the year after she was born. Angela and her brother, Alois Hitler, Jr., were raised by their father and his third wife, Klara Pölzl.
Her half-brother, Adolf Hitler, was born six years after her. They grew very close as children. Angela is the only one of his siblings mentioned in his book, Mein Kampf.
Angela's father died in 1903. Her stepmother died in 1907, leaving a small amount of money. On 14 September 1903, Angela married Leo Raubal. He was a tax inspector. They had a son, Leo, on 12 October 1906. On 4 June 1908, Angela gave birth to Geli. In 1910, her second daughter, Elfriede, was born. Angela's husband, Leo Raubal, died in 1910.
Life as a Widow
After World War I, Angela moved to Vienna. A report from that time described Angela as a kind and hardworking person. It said she became the manager of a boarding house for Jewish students. She even protected the students there from people who were against them. The report mentioned that Angela was a strong person. She would defend the students from attackers.
Angela had not heard from Adolf for ten years. Then, in 1919, he got back in touch with her. In 1924, Adolf was held in Landsberg. Angela traveled from Vienna to visit him there. In 1928, she and Geli moved to a house near Berchtesgaden. This house was called the Haus Wachenfeld at Obersalzberg. Angela became Adolf's housekeeper there. She later managed the household at his larger retreat.
Angela continued to work for her half-brother after Geli's death. However, she did not approve of Adolf's relationship with Eva Braun. Because of this, she eventually left Berchtesgaden. She moved to Dresden.
Second Marriage
On 18 February 1936, Angela married architect Professor Martin Hammitzsch. He had designed a famous cigarette factory in Dresden. He later became the Director of the State School of Building Construction in Dresden.
On 26 June 1936, Angela and Martin visited Passau. This was where Angela had lived as a child. They signed the visitors' book at her old house. The local newspaper reported on their visit.
Adolf Hitler did not seem to approve of Angela's second marriage. He would call his half-sister "Frau Hammitzsch." However, it seems Hitler reconnected with her during World War II. Angela became his way of communicating with the rest of their family. He did not want to talk to them directly. In 1941, she sold her memories of her years with Hitler to a publisher. This brought her 20,000 ℛℳ.
In spring 1945, Dresden was heavily bombed. Adolf Hitler then moved Angela to Berchtesgaden. He wanted to keep her safe from being captured by the Soviets. He also lent her and his younger sister Paula over 100,000 ℛℳ. In Hitler's Last Will and Testament, he promised Angela a monthly payment of 1,000 ℛℳ from his personal money. This money was left to the German state. It is not known if she ever received these payments. Hitler's bank account was frozen for many years. Much of the money was taken by the American government.
After the War
Adolf Hitler reportedly thought his sisters were not very smart. He called them "stupid geese." However, Angela spoke highly of him, even after the war ended. She said that neither she nor her brother knew about the terrible actions that happened during the war. Angela Hitler died from a stroke on 30 October 1949 in Hanover.

Angela's son, Leo, had a son named Peter (born in 1931). Peter is now a retired engineer living in Linz, Austria. Angela's daughter Elfriede married a German lawyer named Ernst Hochegger on 27 June 1937 in Düsseldorf. They had a son, Heiner Hochegger, who was born in January 1945.
