History of Annapolis
The first non-Native American settlers came to this area after California became part of the United States. This happened after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. But many people didn't move here until the early 1870s. At that time, a developer from San Francisco named J.C. Beatty bought and cleared about 1200 acres of redwood forest. He then sold the land to others.
Early Orchards and Post Office
In 1882, a company from San Francisco called Wetmore Brothers Commission Merchants bought some of Beatty's land. They started a large fruit farm called "Annapolis Orchard." They named it after their home, Annapolis Valley, in Nova Scotia. Wetmore Brothers grew fruit on their own land. They also bought fruit from other local farmers to sell.
The area became famous for its fresh and dried apples. They grew popular types like the Gravenstein and Baldwin apples.
The first post office in the area opened in 1884 and closed in 1888. It was called the Monti Post Office. This name came from the area's hilly landscape. For a short time, the community was known as Monti. In 1901, the community wanted a new post office. Wetmore Brothers worked with a local fruit grower, George Batt, to open the Annapolis Post Office. This post office served the community until 2011.
For many years, cutting down redwood trees and processing the wood was a main industry in Annapolis.
What to See and Do
Annapolis is part of the Sonoma Coast AVA. This is a special area known for growing grapes used to make wine, especially a type called pinot noir. Many companies from both the U.S. and other countries have turned old fruit farms into vineyards.
Annapolis is also home to the Starcross Monastic Community. Since 1980, the Annapolis Historical Society has taken care of the Horicon Schoolhouse, which was built in 1877. In the areas around Annapolis, people enjoy activities like kayaking, fishing, and boating.
Education for Kids
The community has one school called Horicon School. It is a public school for students from kindergarten through 8th grade. After finishing Horicon School, students usually go to Point Arena High School. This high school is located in Point Arena, Mendocino County.
