Anne Sowerby Ruston (born 10 June 1963) is an Australian politician. She has been a Senator for South Australia since 2012. From 2019 to 2022, she served as the Minister for Families and Social Services in the government led by Scott Morrison.
Before becoming a politician, Anne Ruston was a commercial rose-grower. She was also the chief executive of the National Wine Centre. She became a Senator to fill a spot that opened up when another Senator resigned. This is called a casual vacancy. She has also served as an Assistant Minister in different government roles.

About Anne Ruston
Early Life and Education
Anne Ruston was born on 10 June 1963 in Renmark, South Australia. She went to Renmark High School. Later, she studied at the University of Southern Queensland. She earned a degree in business from there.
Career Before Politics
In 1987, Anne Ruston started working for a state politician. She helped him with his work in the community. In 1993, she became an adviser for tourism policy. This meant she helped make plans for tourism in the state.
Anne Ruston was very involved in creating the National Wine Centre of Australia. This centre was planned to be a place for wine tourism and education. It also provided office space for groups in the wine industry. She was the project director and then the first CEO of the centre. She oversaw the building of the centre, which opened in 2001.
In 2003, Anne Ruston and her husband bought a business called Ruston's Roses. This was a farm in Renmark that grew roses. Her uncle had started it in 1948. The farm had thousands of rose bushes and different types of flowers. Anne Ruston was the managing director of this business until she became a Senator in 2012. After that, she remained a co-owner. The gardens became more of a place for tourists to visit.
Her Political Journey
Becoming a Senator
Anne Ruston became a vice-president of the Liberal Party of Australia (South Australian Division) in 2011. In 2012, she was chosen to be on the Liberal Party's list for the Senate election. Soon after, a Senator named Mary Jo Fisher resigned. Anne Ruston was then chosen to fill that open spot. She officially became a Senator for South Australia on 5 September 2012.
Roles in Government
From 2014 to 2016, Anne Ruston was a deputy whip in the Senate. This role helps manage the party's members in parliament.
In September 2015, she became the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources. She held this role in the government led by Malcolm Turnbull.
Later, in 2018, she became the Assistant Minister for International Development and the Pacific. This role was in the government led by Scott Morrison.
After the 2019 election, Anne Ruston was given a bigger role. She joined the Cabinet, which is a group of senior ministers. She was appointed the Minister for Families and Social Services. This means she was in charge of government programs that help families and people in need. She was also reappointed as Manager of Government Business in the Senate. In 2021, she also became the Minister for Women's Safety.
