Anne Tabachnick (1927 – June 20, 1995) was an American painter. She created art in a style called expressionism, which means she used colors and shapes to show feelings. Her art was inspired by Abstract Expressionism, a modern art movement, and also by older European art styles.

Anne Tabachnick's Life

Anne Tabachnick was born in 1927 in Derby, Connecticut. Her parents had moved to the U.S. from Eastern Europe. Her father, Abraham Ber Tabachnick, was a famous writer and poet who wrote in Yiddish, a language spoken by many Jewish people. He also worked as a news editor.

Anne spent most of her life living and working in New York City. She studied art and anthropology at Hunter College. Later, she continued her art studies at the University of California, Berkeley in 1951. She also learned from famous painters like Nell Blaine, Hans Hofmann, and William Baziotes. She even received a scholarship to study at the Hans Hofmann School.

Her Art and Style

Anne Tabachnick was part of a group of artists called the New York School. Her paintings often showed things that looked real, like people, landscapes, or objects, which is called "figurative" art.

She painted using thin layers of acrylic paint. She would also use charcoal strokes to outline the main parts of her subjects. Anne found ideas for her art from what she called "The Grand Tradition" of European Masters. These were famous artists like El Greco, Pierre Bonnard, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse. She was also inspired by the beautiful brushwork of East Asian calligraphy painting.

Anne described herself as a "lyrical expressionist." This means her art was expressive and often showed a sense of rhythm or emotion. She was friends with many other artists, including Leland Bell, Louisa Matthiasdottir, Jane Freilicher, Larry Rivers, Bob Thompson, and especially Robert De Niro, Sr..

Anne Tabachnick had many art shows where her work was displayed. She also received several important awards and grants. These included the Longview Foundation Award in 1960 and grants from the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe. She also received grants from the Creative Artists Program, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1983.

In 1985, Anne was an artist in residence at Altos de Chavón in the Dominican Republic. She was also invited to work at well-known art colonies like MacDowell and Yaddo. Her paintings have been shown in famous places like the Museum of Modern Art and the National Academy of Design.
