Studying Primates
During her studies, Dr. Zeller looked closely at chromosomes. She compared the chromosomes of chimpanzees and humans. This helped her understand how humans developed from their primate ancestors.
Dr. Zeller also did a lot of field research. This means she traveled to different places to study primates in their natural homes. She visited Morocco, Gibraltar, Texas, Borneo, and Africa. She observed how primates act and communicate.
Her research isn't just about physical traits. She also studies how diet affects behavior. She has even looked at the role of children in evolution. Her main focus, though, is on how primates communicate with each other.
Using Film for Research
Dr. Zeller is also interested in using films for her research and teaching. She has made videos for her classes. She also analyzes films she took during her field trips.
Her most recent research is about crab-eating macaques. These monkeys live in Indonesia. She studies how adult macaques and baby macaques interact. This helps her understand how young monkeys learn to be part of their group.
Teaching Career
Dr. Zeller started teaching full-time in 1982. She worked at the University of Waterloo in the Anthropology Department. After 1993, she spent several years as the head of the Anthropology department.
Before that, she also taught at other universities. These included the University of Alberta, the University of Victoria, and the University of Toronto. Dr. Zeller retired from teaching in 2009.
