Annette Crosbie (born on February 12, 1934) is a talented actress from Scotland. She is famous for playing Margaret Meldrew in the funny BBC TV show One Foot in the Grave from 1990 to 2000.
Annette has won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress twice. She won in 1971 for her role in The Six Wives of Henry VIII. She won again in 1976 for her part in Edward the Seventh. In 1976, she was also nominated for an award for her role in the movie The Slipper and the Rose. She won another award for Best Actress for the same movie.
She has also appeared in many other films. These include The Pope Must Die (1991), Shooting Fish (1997), The Debt Collector (1999), Calendar Girls (2003), and Into the Woods (2014).

Annette Crosbie's Early Life and Acting Career
Annette Crosbie was born in Gorebridge, Midlothian, Scotland. Her parents were Presbyterian and did not want her to become an actress. But Annette loved acting and joined the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School when she was still a teenager.
She started her acting journey with the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre Company in 1956. She went to Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh.
Becoming a Star: Early Roles
Annette's big chance came in 1970. She was chosen to play Catherine of Aragon in the BBC TV series The Six Wives of Henry VIII. For this role, she won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress in 1971.
In 1973, she acted with Vanessa Redgrave in the BBC show A Picture of Katherine Mansfield.
Playing Queens and Fairy Godmothers
In 1975, Annette played another important queen. She was Queen Victoria in the ITV show Edward the Seventh. This role also earned her the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress in 1976.
She also played Cinderella's fairy godmother in the movie The Slipper and the Rose. This movie was chosen for the Royal Film Première in 1976. In the film, Annette sang a song called "Suddenly It Happens."
Annette also lent her voice to the character of Galadriel in the animated movie The Lord of the Rings in 1978. In 1980, she played an abbess in Hawk the Slayer.
Famous TV Roles
Annette's most well-known role was Margaret Meldrew. She played the patient wife of Victor Meldrew in the BBC sitcom One Foot in the Grave. This show ran from 1990 to 2000.
She also played Janet, the housekeeper, in the TV show Dr. Finlay from 1993 to 1996. This show was based on A. J. Cronin's popular stories. In 1999, she had a touching role in the movie The Debt Collector.
Other roles include Ingrid Strange in Jonathan Creek (1997) and Jessie in the movie Calendar Girls (2003).
Recent Work
In 2008, Annette appeared in a BBC show called Little Dorrit. In 2009, she played Sadie Cairncross in Hope Springs. She also appeared in an episode of Doctor Who in 2010 called "The Eleventh Hour".
In 2014, Annette was in the movies What We Did on Our Holiday and Into the Woods. In 2016, she appeared in the new film version of Dad's Army. More recently, in 2019, she was in an episode of Call the Midwife. In 2020, she appeared in the second season of After Life, a comedy-drama series on Netflix.

Annette Crosbie was given the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998. This was to recognize her great contributions to drama.

Annette is very passionate about helping greyhound dogs. She has campaigned for their welfare. From 2003 to 2006, she was the president of the League Against Cruel Sports. She was also an honorary vice-president of the Scottish SPCA.
Annette Crosbie lives in Wimbledon, London.
