António José de Almeida (born July 27, 1866 – died October 31, 1929) was an important Portuguese politician. He served as the sixth president of Portugal from 1919 to 1923. He was known for his strong speeches and for helping to shape Portugal's government.
Early Life and Career
António José de Almeida was born in Penacova, Portugal. He studied medicine at the University of Coimbra and became a medical doctor. But he was also very interested in politics.
Becoming a Leader
Almeida was a strong supporter of the republican movement. This movement wanted Portugal to be a republic, not a monarchy (ruled by a king or queen). After the 5 October 1910 revolution, which ended the monarchy, he became the Minister for the Interior.
During his time as Minister, he helped create two important universities in 1911: the University of Lisbon and the University of Porto. He was a key figure in the new republican government.
Political Parties
Almeida led a group within the Republican Party that had different ideas from another leader, Afonso Costa. This led him to start his own party, called the Evolutionist Party. This party was often in the opposition, meaning they were not in power.
Later, in 1916, he became the Minister for Finance and also the Prime Minister of Portugal. In 1919, his Evolutionist Party joined with another party to form the new Republican Liberal Party. This new party won the elections that year.
Presidency
On August 6, 1919, António José de Almeida was elected the 6th President of Portugal. He was the only president during the First Republic to finish his full four-year term. This was a challenging time for Portugal, with a lot of political changes and instability.
Despite the difficulties, he stayed in office and worked to lead the country. He is also remembered for his trip to Brazil in 1922. He went there to celebrate 100 years of Brazil's independence from Portugal. During this trip, he was praised for his excellent speaking skills.
Personal Life
António José de Almeida married Maria Joana de Morais Perdigão Queiroga on December 14, 1910. They had one daughter, Maria Teresa Queiroga de Almeida, who was born on December 27, 1911. Maria Teresa later married a medical doctor.
