Antelope is a small, unincorporated community in Jack County, Texas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no official local government. In 2000, about 65 people lived there.

History of Antelope

Antelope got its own post office in 1858. B. F. Spear was the first postmaster in 1859. The community is located near the West Fork of the Trinity River. Because of its location, Antelope became an important stop. It was a place for cattle travelers to get supplies and rest overnight.

In 1875, the town square and its six surrounding blocks were planned out. This plan was officially recorded in 1889. Around 1900, Antelope was a busy place with about 300 residents. It had a hotel, several general stores, and both Methodist and Baptist churches. People could take daily stagecoaches to nearby Henrietta and Graham. The town also had a saw and grist mill until 1900. This mill was later replaced by a cotton mill. Traveling salespeople, called "drummers," often stayed here.

By 1914, the population had dropped to 200. The mill and hotel were gone, but Antelope still had local businesses. There was also a doctor and a blacksmith. In the 1940s, 166 people lived in the village. It had a gas station, a garage, and the Mullins Brothers general store, which had been open since 1883. The community did well thanks to nearby oilfields and cattle farming.

The population went down to 65 in the 1980s. It stayed at that number in 1990 and 2000. At that time, there were still two businesses in Antelope.
