Anthoni van Noordt (born around 1619, died March 23, 1675) was a talented Dutch composer and organist. He lived in Amsterdam his whole life. He is best known for his amazing music written for the organ.

Anthoni van Noordt's Life and Career

Anthoni van Noordt was born in Amsterdam. He had two brothers, Jacobus and Jan van Noordt. They were also musicians.

In 1652, Anthoni became the organist at a church called the Nieuwezijdskapel. An organist is someone who plays the organ, a very large musical instrument.

He later moved to a new job in 1664. He became the organist at the Nieuwe Kerk, which means "New Church." He worked there until 1673.

His Organ Music

All the music we know by Anthoni van Noordt was written for the organ. His style was similar to famous composers like Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. He also followed the style of the North German school of music.

His works include:

  • Ten psalm settings: These are musical pieces based on religious songs from the Bible. Nine of them have variations, which means the main tune is played in different ways.
  • Six fugal fantasias: A fantasia is a free-form musical piece. Fugal means it uses a special technique called a fugue, where different musical lines chase and imitate each other.

Anthoni van Noordt's music is considered very high quality. It shows he was a master of counterpoint. This is a way of writing music where several independent melodies play at the same time.

His music was printed in a book in 1659. It was called Tabulatuur-boeck van psalmen en fantasyen. This book is now kept in a library in Kraków, Poland. The way the music was written in the book was quite unique for its time.
