Anthony's Nose is a mountain peak in New York State. It stands tall along the Hudson River. This peak is in the northern part of Westchester County. It's a popular spot for hikers and offers great views.

Where is Anthony's Nose?
Anthony's Nose is part of the Hudson Highlands. It forms a ridge that runs from northeast to southwest. To its northeast is Canada Hill. The Hudson River borders it on the southwest. The river makes a turn around the mountain's tip. This means one side slopes down to marshy areas by the river.
Most of the land around Anthony's Nose is part of Camp Smith. This is a special area for the New York National Guard.
Roads and Bridges Nearby
A major road, US 6/202, crosses the Hudson River. It uses the Bear Mountain Bridge. This bridge connects to the western tip of Anthony's Nose. Here, it meets NY 9D.
- NY 9D runs northeast along the mountain's side. It goes towards Garrison, New York.
- US 202/6 goes southeast. It follows the cliffs towards Peekskill.
The Metro-North's Hudson Line also runs along the mountain. It passes under the western tip and the Bear Mountain Bridge. It goes through a tunnel named after the peak.
How Did It Get Its Name?
People have called this peak Anthony's Nose since at least 1697. The name appeared on an old land document. There are a few fun stories about how it got its name!
Stories Behind the Name
- Some believe it was named after Saint Anthony. There used to be a rock formation nearby called "Saint Anthony's Face."
- Another story comes from Pierre Van Cortlandt. He owned this mountain a long time ago. He said it was named after a sea captain named Anthony Hogan. This captain had a very large nose, like the character Cyrano de Bergerac. One of his sailors supposedly joked that the mountain looked like the captain's nose. This joke stuck, and the name became popular.
- In a funny book called History of New York, Washington Irving said the name came from Antony Van Corlear. He was a trumpeter on Henry Hudson's ship.
- Another idea is that it was named after Anthony de Hooges. He was an early Dutch settler who also had a very noticeable nose.
Historical Importance
During the American Revolutionary War, a large chain was stretched across the Hudson River. It went from Fort Montgomery to the base of Anthony's Nose. This was done to stop British ships. The Bear Mountain Bridge was later built in about the same spot.
Hiking Trails
Anthony's Nose is a great place for hiking. The famous Appalachian Trail crosses the Bear Mountain Bridge. It follows NY 9D for a short bit. Then, it turns east and climbs up the mountain.
The trail goes around the top ridge. It then goes down into a valley between Anthony's Nose and Mine Mountain. From there, it leads into South Mountain Pass.
Camp Smith Trail
There is another trail called the Camp Smith Trail. It is marked with blue blazes. This trail leaves the Appalachian Trail. It runs along the ridge to reach the very top of Anthony's Nose. From the summit, it follows the edge of Camp Smith. It ends at a parking area along US 202/6.
