Anthony Ray Denman (born October 30, 1979) is an American former professional football player. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He played for the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills for two seasons. The Jacksonville Jaguars picked him in the 2001 NFL draft. He also played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Anthony Denman's Early Life
Anthony Denman grew up playing many sports. He earned four letters in high school football. This means he played well enough to earn a special award each year. He went to Rusk High School.
He played many different positions on the field. These included running back, quarterback, and linebacker. He also played defensive line and fullback.
In his senior year (1996), he was named all-state. He ran for 1,250 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. On defense, he made 85 tackles and one sack. He was also the team captain that year.
He earned top honors in his junior and senior years. He was first-team all-East Texas and all-district. In 1995, as a junior, he ran for 1,428 yards and 20 touchdowns. Anthony also earned three letters in track and field.
College Football Career
Anthony Denman played college football at the University of Notre Dame. He played there from 1997 to 2000. During his time, he made 207 tackles and nine sacks.
In 2000, he was named a second-team All-American. This is a big honor for college players. He was also the most valuable player (MVP) for the Fighting Irish. He was a team captain in his senior year too.
Playing in the NFL
Anthony Denman was chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2001 NFL draft. He was the 213th player picked overall. He signed with the team in June 2001. However, the Jaguars released him in August 2001.
He then signed with the Cleveland Browns in August 2001. He was released a few days later. But he was signed to their practice squad in September. Later that month, he joined the main team. He played in eleven games for the Browns during the 2001 season. The Browns released him in September 2002.
After that, the Buffalo Bills signed him in September 2002. He played in sixteen games for the Bills in 2002.
