Early Life and Education
Anthony Henderson was born in Washington, D.C.. He joined the Marines as a second lieutenant in 1989. He studied law and earned a degree in 1994. Even though he could have become a military lawyer, he chose to join the combat forces.
He continued his education at several military schools. These included the Amphibious Warfare School and the Naval War College. He also attended the National War College. He completed special programs at the Harvard School of Business and MIT.
Marine Corps Career
As a Marine officer, General Henderson served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He received several awards for his bravery. These include the Bronze Star and the Iraq Campaign Medal.
Service in Iraq
In 2003, he was part of the invasion of Iraq. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. He returned to Iraq in 2004. During this time, he was deployed near the border between Iraq and Syria.
Service in Afghanistan
In 2008, Henderson went to Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. His Marines said he helped keep almost all of them safe. This happened during a successful battle against the Taliban at Jugroom Fort in Helmand Province. Stories of his courage became well-known among Marines. His strong leadership was also noted by Entrepreneur magazine.
Leadership Roles and Promotions
In 2014, he was chosen to lead the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. By March 2021, he was working as the director of concepts and plans. This role was at the United States Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory. In March 2021, he was selected to become a brigadier general. He was officially promoted on July 1, 2021. He also became the commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade.
On November 10, 2022, General Henderson was featured in the Marine Corps' 247th birthday message. This message highlighted confidence and strength.
Throughout his career, he has supported fellow service members. He has done this through government and private programs. He also helped create peer support systems.
In April 2022, General Henderson led a Marine unit in a NATO training exercise. This exercise was called "Cold Response." It involved troops from Italy, France, and the Netherlands. They trained in the Arctic to prepare for combat in different environments.
General Henderson later served as Deputy Director for Joint Strategic Planning. In June 2024, he became the commanding general of Marine Corps Training Command.

General Henderson is married to Sonja. She is a retired colonel from the United States Army. They have six children together.
