A Look at Antihuala's History
Antihuala has a significant place in the history of Chile, especially during a time known as the Arauco War. This was a long period of conflict between the Spanish conquerors and the native Mapuche people.
The Capture of Caupolicán
On February 5, 1558, an important event happened near Antihuala. A Spanish leader named Pedro de Avendaño, along with sixty of his soldiers, managed to capture a very important Mapuche leader. This leader was Caupolicán, who was a powerful lonco (chief) from Pilmaiquén and also the Gran Toqui (a military leader) of the Mapuche people. At the time, Caupolicán was camped nearby with a small group of his followers.
What Happened Next
After his capture, Caupolicán was taken to a place called Cañete. There, the local Spanish governor, Alonso de Reinoso, decided his fate. Caupolicán was put to death for leading the Mapuche resistance against the Spanish. This event was a major moment in the ongoing conflict between the Spanish and the Mapuche people.
