Los Álamos is a city and a commune (a type of local government area) in Chile. It is located in the Arauco Province within the Biobío Region.

People and Place: Los Álamos Facts

Los Álamos covers an area of about 599.1 square kilometers (231.3 square miles). In 2002, a census showed that 18,632 people lived there. This included 9,456 men and 9,176 women.

Most of the people, about 88% (16,394 people), lived in urban areas, which are like towns or cities. The other 12% (2,238 people) lived in rural areas, which are more like the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Los Álamos grew by 10.4%.

The commune also includes a smaller place called Antihuala.

How Los Álamos is Governed

Los Álamos is a commune, which means it's a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The leader of the commune is called an alcalde (mayor). The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

Since 2013, the alcalde of Los Álamos has been Jorge Fuentes Fetis.

Los Álamos is also part of larger areas for national elections. For example, when people vote for members of the Chamber of Deputies (a part of Chile's parliament), Los Álamos is in the 46th electoral district. This district also includes other cities like Lota and Lebu. The commune is also part of the 13th senatorial constituency for the Senate.
