The Antillean siskin (Spinus dominicensis) is a small, colorful bird. It belongs to the finch family. This bird is special because it's the only type of Spinus siskin found in the Caribbean.
Where the Antillean Siskin Lives
The Antillean siskin lives only on the island of Hispaniola. This island is shared by two countries: Haiti and the Dominican Republic. When a species lives only in one place, it is called endemic.
These birds like to live in certain places. They prefer moist forests found in mountains. These are called montane forests. They can also be found in areas where forests used to be, even if they are now changed.
How the Antillean Siskin Evolved
Scientists believe the Antillean siskin is a very old species. It seems to be the oldest living type of Spinus siskin from North America. It was the first to branch off from a group of birds. This group later gave rise to other siskins. These include the pine siskin, Eurasian siskin, and black-capped siskin.
