Don Antonio Francisco Coronel (October 21, 1817 – April 17, 1894) was an important Californian politician and rancher. He served as the Mayor of Los Angeles and also as the California State Treasurer.
Coronel is seen as one of the first people to help preserve history in Los Angeles. His own collection of items helped start the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Antonio Coronel's Early Life and Career
Antonio Francisco Coronel was born in Mexico City. This was during the last years of colonial New Spain. His father was Ygnacio Coronel.
In 1834, when Antonio was 17, he moved to Alta California with his parents. They were part of the Híjar-Padrés Colony.
Political Roles and Public Service
In 1838, Antonio Coronel became the Assistant Secretary of Tribunals for the Pueblo de Los Ángeles. This was an early form of local government.
By 1843, he was named Justice of the Peace. This role was like being the Mayor at that time.
During the Mexican–American War (1846–1847), Antonio was a captain in the Mexican army. He took part in military actions against the United States.
After the war, Antonio Coronel continued his public service. He was the first Los Angeles County Assessor from 1850 to 1856. An assessor helps decide the value of property for taxes.
In 1853, Coronel became the Mayor of Los Angeles. He also served on the Los Angeles Common Council from 1854 to 1867. This council helped manage the city.
From 1867 to 1871, he was the California State Treasurer. This important job involves managing the state's money.
Contributions to History and Culture
Antonio Coronel married Mariana Williamson in 1873.
He owned Rancho Los Feliz, a large piece of land.
His collection of historical items was very important. It became the foundation for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. This shows his interest in preserving history.

Antonio Coronel was married to Mariana W. de Coronel.
His brother, Manuel F. Coronel, was the first Zanjero of Los Angeles. A zanjero managed the water system for the city.
He also had a sister, Maria Antonio Coronel. She married Alexis Godey in 1863.
