Antonio Muñoz Molina (born 10 January 1956) is a famous Spanish writer. He is known for his amazing novels and has won many important awards. Since 1995, he has been a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy, which is a very important group for the Spanish language.

Antonio Muñoz Molina was born in a town called Úbeda in the Jaén province of Spain. He grew up there and later moved away to study.

Early Life and Education

Antonio studied the history of art at the University of Granada. This means he learned a lot about famous paintings, sculptures, and buildings. Later, he also studied journalism in Madrid. Journalism is about writing for newspapers and magazines.

Becoming a Writer

Antonio Muñoz Molina started his writing career in the 1980s. His first book, El Robinsón urbano, came out in 1984. This book was a collection of his articles from newspapers. He has also written columns regularly for big newspapers like El País in Spain and Die Welt in Germany.

His First Books

His very first novel was Beatus ille, published in 1986. In this book, he created an imaginary city called Mágina. This city was inspired by his hometown in Andalusia, and it appeared in some of his later stories too.

In 1987, Antonio won Spain's National Narrative Prize for his novel El invierno en Lisboa. This book was a tribute to detective stories and jazz music. Another one of his famous novels, El jinete polaco, won the Planeta Prize in 1991. It also won the National Narrative Prize again in 1992, showing how much people loved his writing.

Some of his other well-known novels include Beltenebros (1989). This story is about love and mystery set in Madrid after the Spanish Civil War. He also wrote Los misterios de Madrid (1992) and El dueño del secreto (1994).

Antonio Muñoz Molina has received many important awards for his work. He won the Premio Planeta in 1991. In 2013, he received both the Jerusalem Prize and the Prince of Asturias Award for literature. These awards celebrate writers who have made a big impact with their stories.

Antonio Muñoz Molina was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia Española in 1995. This is a very respected group that helps protect and improve the Spanish language. He officially joined them in 1996.

He is married to another Spanish author and journalist, Elvira Lindo. For a time, he lived in New York City, United States. While there, he was the director of the Instituto Cervantes from 2004 to 2005. The Instituto Cervantes is an organization that promotes the Spanish language and culture around the world.

His novel Sepharad was translated into English by Margaret Sayers Peden. This translation won an award in 2004. His novel Un andar solitario entre la gente was translated into French by Isabelle Gugnon. This translation won the Prix Médicis étranger in 2020.
