About Elvira Lindo
Elvira Lindo was born in Cádiz, a city in Spain. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Madrid. There, she started studying journalism at Complutense University of Madrid.
However, she didn't finish her degree. Instead, she began working in television and radio. She worked as a speaker, an actress, and a scriptwriter.
The Story of Manolito Gafotas
Elvira Lindo's first novel was inspired by a character she created for radio. This character was a boy from Madrid named Manolito Gafotas. He quickly became a classic in Spanish children's literature.
Manolito is the son of a truck driver. He lives a simple life in Carabanchel, a working-class area of Madrid. The stories about Manolito are told from his point of view. They are full of humour, irony, and smart observations about society.
Writing for Adults and Movies
Besides her children's books, Elvira Lindo has also written novels and plays for adults. She has worked on movie scripts too. She wrote the screenplay for the film La primera noche de mi vida.
She also worked with director Miguel Albaladejo on the scripts for the Manolito Gafotas movie and Ataque verbal. She even adapted a novel by her husband, Antonio Muñoz Molina, into a screenplay called Plenilunio.
Life in New York and Journalism
For some time, Elvira Lindo lived in New York City. This was because her husband, Antonio Muñoz Molina, became the director of the Instituto Cervantes there.
She often writes for El País, a Spanish newspaper. She contributes articles and also writes for other magazines and newspapers.
