Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán was an important Spanish navy officer. He lived from March 25, 1744, to April 4, 1816. He was a key figure in the Spanish Royal Navy.

Life and Achievements
Antonio Valdés joined the navy when he was just 13 years old. This was a common age for young people to start their military careers back then. He quickly showed he was a skilled and brave officer.
Defending Spanish Forts
In 1762, Antonio Valdés played a big part in defending Morro Castle and San Salvador de la Punta Fortress. These forts were in Havana, Cuba. They were attacked during the Battle of Havana (1762). His actions during this battle were very brave and important.
He also helped fight against pirates in 1767. These pirates came from the Barbary Coast in North Africa. They often attacked ships and coastal towns.
Antonio Valdés became the director of the Royal Artillery Factory of La Cavada in 1781. This factory made cannons and other weapons for the navy. He did such a good job reorganizing it that he was promoted. He became the inspector general of the entire Spanish Navy.
In 1783, when he was 38 years old, he became the Navy Minister. This was a very important job. He continued to modernize the Spanish Navy, making it stronger and more efficient.
Designing the Spanish Flag
In 1785, King Charles III of Spain asked for new designs for the Spanish naval flag. Antonio Valdés drew 12 different flags. One of his designs was chosen to become the official Spanish naval ensign flag. This flag is still very similar to the flag of Spain today.
Special Honors
Antonio Valdés received a very high honor in 1797. He became a knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece. This is one of the oldest and most respected knightly orders in Europe.
Places Named After Him
Several places were named after Antonio Valdés. These include the towns of Valdez, Alaska and Valdez, Florida in the United States. Also, Bazan Bay in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, was named in his honor.
The large oil tanker called the Exxon Valdez was named after the Alaskan town. This town, in turn, was named after Antonio Valdés.
