The Famous Panenka Penalty Kick
Antonín Panenka became famous around the world during the UEFA Euro 1976 football tournament. His country, Czechoslovakia, made it all the way to the final. They faced West Germany.
The game was very exciting and ended in a 2–2 tie after extra time. This meant the winner would be decided by a penalty shoot-out. This was the first time a European Championship final was decided this way. The first seven players scored their penalties. Then, West Germany's fourth player, Uli Hoeneß, missed his shot.
The score was 4–3, and Panenka stepped up to take Czechoslovakia's fifth penalty. If he scored, his team would win the championship. The pressure was huge! Panenka pretended he was going to shoot the ball to the side of the goal. This made the German goalkeeper, Sepp Maier, dive to his left. But instead, Panenka gently chipped the ball right into the middle of the net.
This clever and daring goal surprised everyone. A French journalist watching the game called Panenka "a poet" because of his artistic kick. This winning penalty is one of the most famous in football history. It made Panenka's name known everywhere, and now this special way of taking a penalty is called a "Panenka" kick. Many players around the world have tried to copy his famous move since 1976.
