The Story of Applegate

How Applegate Got Its Name

Applegate was first settled in 1849 by a man named Lisbon Applegate. He came to California from Missouri with his son, George. The Applegate family bought land near a place called Clipper Gap and started a fruit farm. The main house of their farm was where a gas station and bar are today. Lisbon Applegate eventually went back to Missouri, but his son, George W. Applegate, stayed in California.

Early Names of the Community

As the community grew, it was first called "Bear River House." This name came from its closeness to the Bear River, which is a short distance away. When a post office was opened in 1855, the community officially became known as "Lisbon." This was done to honor its founder, Lisbon Applegate. George W. Applegate became the postmaster. In the 1870s, the settlement was renamed "Applegate," also to honor its founder.

Applegate and the Railroad

At one time, Applegate was a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad. This railroad later became known as the Southern Pacific. In 1929, a second track was added. The station on the eastbound track was then named East Applegate. The two tracks are separated by about 0.25 miles (0.4 kilometers).

Unique Features of Applegate

Applegate is the only known place in Northern California where the Ladyfoot Trumpet flower grows wild. Some people believe that its seeds were left here long ago. They think this happened when the Lemurians passed through on their way to Mount Shasta.

Climate in Applegate

Applegate has a Mediterranean climate. This type of climate is known for its cool, wet winters. It also has hot, dry summers. This is similar to the climate found around the Mediterranean Sea.
