Aramingo Borough was once a small town, called a borough, located in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It doesn't exist as a separate town anymore. This is because it became part of the much larger City of Philadelphia in 1854. This happened due to a law called the Act of Consolidation, 1854.

History of Aramingo Borough
How Aramingo Borough Was Formed
Aramingo Borough was officially created on April 11, 1850. It was formed from a larger area known as Northern Liberties Township. Think of it like a new neighborhood being given its own special name and rules.
Where Aramingo Borough Was Located
Aramingo Borough had specific borders. To its northeast, it was next to Bridesburg and the Frankford Creek. This creek also separated it from parts of Oxford Township and Frankford.
To the northwest, it bordered the rest of the unincorporated Northern Liberties Township. Part of the Northern Liberties District was also a neighbor, partly to the southwest. Finally, the Richmond District was to its southeast and southwest.
The Meaning Behind the Name "Aramingo"
The name "Aramingo" comes from an old Native American name for a nearby stream. This stream was called Gunner's Run by the Swedes and English settlers.
The original Native American name for the stream was "Tumanaraming." This long name meant "Wolf Walk." To create "Aramingo," the first five letters ("Tuman") were removed, and an "o" was added to the end.
Aramingo's Legacy Today
Even though Aramingo Borough no longer exists as a separate town, its name lives on. Aramingo Avenue is still a very important road in several Northeast Philadelphia neighborhoods. These include Port Richmond and Fishtown. Today, Aramingo Avenue is a busy street with many stores and shopping centers.
