Early Life and Education
Archibald Kennedy was born in Berkeley Square, London. He was the oldest son of Archibald Kennedy, 3rd Marquess of Ailsa. His mother was the Honourable Evelyn. She was the daughter of Charles Stuart, 12th Lord Blantyre.
He went to several well-known schools. These included Monkton Combe School and Eton College. He also studied at Trinity College, Cambridge and the University of Edinburgh. In 1897, he became a lawyer, known as an advocate in Scotland.
A Life in the Military
Archibald Kennedy had a strong military career. On January 7, 1900, he became a captain. He joined the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Serving in the Boer War
Captain Kennedy served in the Second Boer War from 1900 to 1902. This war took place in South Africa. He showed great bravery during this time. He earned two medals and five special clasps for his service. For a few months in 1902, he worked directly with the regular army. After the war ended in June 1902, he returned home. He sailed from Cape Town and arrived in Southampton the next month.
World War I Service
In June 1911, he was promoted to major. He continued his military service during World War I. This was a very large and important global conflict. He also held other important roles. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for Ayrshire in Scotland. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
Family and Later Life
In April 1938, when he was 65 years old, Archibald Kennedy became the Marquess of Ailsa. This happened after his father passed away.
He married Frances Emily McTaggart-Stewart on April 20, 1903. Her father was Sir Mark MacTaggart-Stewart, 1st Baronet. Archibald and Frances did not have any children.
Archibald Kennedy passed away in February 1943. He was 70 years old. His younger brother, Charles Kennedy, 5th Marquess of Ailsa, took over his title. Frances, the Marchioness of Ailsa, died a few years later in October 1949.
