Charles Kennedy (born April 10, 1875 – died June 1, 1956) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was known as the 5th Marquess of Ailsa. Before he became a Marquess in 1943, people called him Lord Charles Kennedy. He was the son of Archibald Kennedy, 3rd Marquess of Ailsa.

Life of Charles Kennedy
Early Life and Education
Lord Charles was born at Culzean Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. This castle was his family's home. He went to a famous school called Eton. After that, he studied at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester.
Military Service and Adventures
Charles Kennedy chose a career in the military. In 1894, he joined the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was a second lieutenant for a short time.
Later, he fought in the Second Boer War in South Africa. He was a captain in an Australian army group. For his service, he received the Queen's South Africa Medal. This medal had three special clasps, showing where he fought.
After the Boer War, Kennedy moved to the United States. He lived in Wyoming for several years. Then he moved to places like Nevada, Missouri and Davenport, Iowa.
World War I Contributions
When World War I began in 1914, he returned to Great Britain. He joined the Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry in 1915. He was considered "unfit for overseas service." This meant he couldn't fight abroad.
Instead, he became an area gas officer in 1916. In 1918, he briefly went to France. There, he worked as a gas instructor for soldiers. He left the Yeomanry in 1921.
Family and Later Years
In 1925, Charles Kennedy married Constance Barbara Clarke. She passed away in 1931. He married again in 1933 to Helen Ethel McDouall.
In 1943, Charles Kennedy became the 5th Marquess of Ailsa. He inherited this important title from his older brother.
Gifting Culzean Castle
In 1945, he made a very generous gift. He gave his family home, Culzean Castle, to the National Trust for Scotland. This organization helps protect important places. He gave the castle so everyone could enjoy it.
Charles Kennedy passed away in 1956. He did not have any children. So, his titles went to his younger brother.
