Arden's Past: From Farm to Homes
Historically, Arden was a farm. It was part of the land owned by Sir John Maxwell. This land was originally given to Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland. This happened when he married Marjorie Bruce, the daughter of Robert the Bruce.
Arden is close to Thornliebank. Thornliebank was a village known for making cloth. They also did a special printing process called beetling. Thornliebank linen was very famous from the early 1800s. The mill closed around 1920. A building next to what is now Arden was used as a Prisoner of War (POW) camp. This was during World War II.
The Scottish Special Housing Association (S.S.H.A.) built the Arden housing estate. They built it between 1953 and 1957. Most of the buildings were four-storey tenements. These had shared entrances. The goal was to give new homes to families. These families had been living in crowded old buildings in the city center.
Arden faced some tough times in the 1970s and 1980s. Money was given to help fix up the area. It has improved a lot since then. In 1999, Glen Oaks Housing Association bought the estate. They have been working to make necessary repairs.
Community Life and Facilities
Arden was the first housing area to have a public house built privately. This was called The Cuillins. It opened in 1964-1965. It became a brewery pub in 1968.
Arden is proud of its new Ashpark Primary School. This school opened on December 2, 2008. It replaced the old Arden Primary School and Carnwadric Primary School. Another school, St. Louise Primary, joined with the rebuilt St. Vincent's Primary in Carnwadric. St. Louise's closed in June 2009. Its buildings were later taken down.
The closest train station is Kennishead. This station is named after another farm once owned by Sir John Maxwell.
Arden in TV Shows
Arden was shown in a documentary program. It was called Colin and Justin on the Estate. This show looked at efforts to improve the area. Some people who lived in Arden were concerned about how the show presented things. They felt it focused too much on buildings that were going to be torn down. They wished it had shown more of the successful renovations.
However, Alasdair McKee, the chief executive of Glen Oaks, thought the program was a success. He said the improvements helped convince people that positive changes could happen. He also noted that the show helped create a waiting list of people who wanted to live in the estate.
Community Challenges and Improvements
Over the years, Arden has faced some challenges. Like many older areas, it has needed a lot of work to improve. The community and housing associations are always working hard. They want to make Arden a better place for everyone. They focus on improving homes and local services.
