History of Ardsley
The Battle of Edge Hill
A long time ago, on December 7, 1777, an important battle happened near Ardsley. It was called the Battle of Edge Hill. This battle took place during the American Revolutionary War.
During the battle, British soldiers attacked American troops. The Americans were positioned on a ridge called Edge Hill. This ridge runs along what are now Willow Grove Avenue and Edge Hill Road.
Near where Limekiln Pike crosses Edge Hill, British and Hessian (German soldiers fighting for the British) light infantry fought American forces. These American forces included Pennsylvania militia and the 2nd Connecticut Regiment. They were led by a man named Joseph Reed. The British and Hessians won this part of the battle.
Farther along Edge Hill, American riflemen and Maryland militia put up a stronger fight. They were led by Daniel Morgan. Eventually, they had to fall back. They joined the main American army at Camp Hill and Fort Washington.
Tropical Storm Allison
In 2001, Ardsley was hit hard by Tropical Storm Allison. This storm caused a lot of damage, especially from flooding. To prevent future floods, the township started a special project.
This project involved bringing back a drainage basin that locals called "Floaties Pond." A drainage basin is like a large bowl-shaped area. It collects and holds extra rainwater. This helps stop water from flooding homes and streets. The project worked well, and there hasn't been much flooding since then.
