Exploring Ardtornish Bay
Ardtornish Bay is part of the large Ardtornish Estate. This estate is famous for its lovely gardens. It is also home to two interesting castles.
Castles and Homes
- Ardtornish Castle: This castle is now mostly in ruins. It was once a very strong and grand building. The famous writer Sir Walter Scott even wrote about it in one of his poems! Today, you can still see parts of its old tower.
- Kinlochaline Castle: Unlike Ardtornish Castle, Kinlochaline Castle is still lived in today.
- Ardtornish House: Close to the bay, you'll find Ardtornish House. This large house has stables and other buildings nearby.
Nearby Villages and Towns
- Lochaline: This is the biggest village in the Morvern area. You can find it along the A884 road.
- Fort William: The town of Fort William is the closest major transport hub. This means it's a place where you can find buses, trains, or other ways to travel.
Geography of the Bay
Ardtornish Bay faces south towards the Sound of Mull. A "sound" is a narrow channel of water connecting two larger bodies of water. The Sound of Mull runs between Aulston Point and Tobermory in the north, and Duart Point on the Isle of Mull in the southeast.
Islands You Can See
From Ardtornish Bay, you can spot a few small islands in the Sound of Mull:
- Eilean Rubha an Ridere (near Inninmore Bay)
- Eileanan Glas (in the middle of the Sound)
- Sgeir nan Gobhar (off the coast of Mull)
Cliffs and Hills
To the east of the bay, you'll see the impressive cliffs of Aoineadh Beag. These cliffs are part of Ardtornish Bay and rise up to 300 meters (about 984 feet) high! After the cliffs, the land gently slopes up to the hilltop of Glais Bheinn, which is 479 meters (about 1,572 feet) tall.
To the north, there's a narrow opening called Coalas na h-Àirde. This leads into Loch Aline.
The largest peak in the area is An Sleaghach, which is 515 meters (about 1,690 feet) high. It's about 4.5 miles to the west. However, you can't see it from the bay because the Aoineadh Beag cliffs are so tall.
