Argentina and India have been friends for many years. They have strong ties in many areas. Argentina has an embassy in Delhi and a Consulate in Mumbai. India has an embassy in Buenos Aires. Both countries are part of important global groups. These include the G20, Group of 24, and Group of 77.

History of Friendship

The famous Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore visited Argentina in 1924. He stayed for two months as a guest of Victoria Ocampo. Tagore wrote poems about his time there. Victoria Ocampo later received an honorary degree from an Indian university.

India opened a trade office in Buenos Aires in 1943. This office became an embassy in 1949. Argentina had a consulate in Calcutta in the 1920s. It moved to Delhi and became an embassy in 1950. Argentina also opened a Consulate General in Mumbai in 2009.

Many leaders from both countries have visited each other. Argentine President Arturo Frondizi visited India in 1961. This was the first visit by an Argentine President. Other Argentine Presidents like Reynaldo Bignone, Raul Alfonsin, Carlos Menem, and Cristina Kirchner also visited India.

In 1968, Indira Gandhi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Argentina. Indian President Zail Singh visited in 1984. P. V. Narasimha Rao visited in 1995 for a special summit.

Money and Business

Many Indian companies work in Argentina. These include TCS, Wipro, and Bajaj. They employ thousands of Argentines. An Indian oil company, ONGC, is looking into oil exploration in Argentina.

Argentine companies like IMPSA also operate in India. In 2013, India invested about $930 million in Argentina. Argentina invested about $120 million in India.

Trade Between Countries

India and Mercosur, a group Argentina belongs to, have a special trade agreement. This agreement started in 2009.

In 2012, trade between India and Argentina was worth $1.838 billion. India sold goods worth $574 million to Argentina. By 2016, trade grew to $2.9 billion. India's exports to Argentina were $700 million. Argentina's exports to India were $2.2 billion.

In 2014, Argentina sent $1.8 billion worth of goods to India. This was 2.6% of all their exports. The main goods Argentina sold to India were:

  • Animal and vegetable oils and fats
  • Oil
  • Ores, slag, and ash
  • Raw hides (animal skins)
  • Organic chemicals
  • Machines and engines
  • Inorganic chemicals
  • Wool
  • Vegetables
  • Tanning and dyeing extracts

Science and Learning

In 2007, India helped Argentina launch a small satellite called Pehuensat-1. Both India and Argentina are part of the Antarctic Treaty. This means they work together on scientific research in Antarctica. They signed agreements for this in 1998 and 2006.

India offers scholarships to Argentine students each year. Argentine diplomats have also trained in India. The University of Buenos Aires offers courses in Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medicine system. This is done with an Indian university. The Jawaharlal Nehru University in India also works with San Luis University in Argentina.

Sports Connections

The Indian Football Academy has worked with the Argentine football club River Plate. They do training and exchanges. The famous Argentine football player Diego Maradona visited India in 2009. Many Argentine players also play in the Indian Super League.

Argentina's national football team has a huge fan base in Indian states like Kerala and West Bengal.

New Ways to Connect

Both Argentina and India have great movie industries. Most Argentine movies are shown in India only at film festivals. Indian movies, like those from Bollywood and Tamil cinema, could be very popular in Argentina. This is a great way for both countries to share their culture.

Also, both countries could promote tourism to each other. They have unique places to visit. However, there are no direct flights between Latin America and South Asia. This makes it harder for people to travel and connect.

As of 2013, about 200 Indian citizens live in Buenos Aires. Many of them have lived there for over 30 years. Other Indians work for companies in Argentina. Around 300 Punjabi Sikhs settled in Salta province in the early 1900s. By 2013, their population was about 2000. They are now Argentine citizens and mostly work in trade. There is a Sikh temple (gurudwara) in Rosario de la Frontera.
