Aritatsu Ogi (小城 得達, Ogi Aritatsu, born December 10, 1942) is a famous Japanese football player and coach. He was a talented Midfielder who played for the Japan national team. Ogi is known for helping Japan win a bronze medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
Playing for Clubs
Ogi was born in Hiroshima, Japan, on December 10, 1942. After finishing his studies at Chuo University, he joined a local football club. This club was called Toyo Industries at the time. He started playing for them in 1965.
His team was very successful. They won the Japan Soccer League championship five times. These wins were in 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1970. Ogi was a top scorer in the league in 1966. He was also chosen for the "Best Eleven" team for seven years in a row. This is like being picked for an all-star team. He was also named the Japanese Footballer of the Year in 1965 and 1970. Ogi played 163 games for his club and scored 57 goals. He stopped playing football in 1976.
Playing for Japan
Ogi first played for the Japan national team on August 8, 1963. He was still a student at Chuo University then. His first game was against Malaysia.
He was chosen to play for Japan in two Olympic Games. He played in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He also played in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Ogi played in every match at both Olympics. In the 1964 Olympics, he scored the winning goal against Argentina in their first game.
At the 1968 Olympics, Japan's team won a bronze medal. This was a huge achievement for Japanese football. In 2018, this special team was honored in the Japan Football Hall of Fame. Ogi also played for Japan in the Asian Games in 1966, 1970, and 1974. Overall, he played 62 games for Japan and scored 11 goals before he retired in 1976.
Becoming a Coach
After he stopped playing, Ogi became a football manager. In 1977, he became the manager for his old club, Toyo Industries. He managed the team until 1980.
In 2006, Aritatsu Ogi was honored again. He was chosen to be part of the Japan Football Hall of Fame. This shows how important he was to Japanese football.
