History of AriZona Beverages
The story of AriZona Beverages began in 1971. Two friends, John Ferolito and Don Vultaggio, started a business together. Their company was called Ferolito, Vultaggio & Sons. They began by delivering beer and soda in Brooklyn, New York. They used a Volkswagen van to bring drinks to homes and stores.
Over time, they got more delivery trucks. They then decided to start making their own drinks. In 1990, they noticed how popular bottled juices and teas from companies like Snapple were. They wanted to create their own unique drinks.
To make their drinks stand out, they used bright, colorful designs on their cans. Their first cans were "Big Cans" holding about 710 milliliters (24 US fluid ounces). In 1992, they released their first AriZona teas. Don Vultaggio chose the name "Arizona" even though he had never visited the state. He thought the name looked good on the packaging.
The designs for the cans were inspired by Don Vultaggio's family. His wife, Eileen, inspired the lemon tea can design. His son Spencer's coloring books and his mother's perfume bottle helped inspire the green tea design. A graphic designer named Jean Pettine also helped create the first designs.
By mid-1993, AriZona teas were sold in over 30 states. Most of their sales were in New York, New Jersey, Detroit, and Miami. By the end of 1994, AriZona Iced Tea was sold in all 50 states. Their sales grew from about $10-20 million in 1992 to an estimated $300 million in 1994. In 1994, the company moved its main office to Woodbury, New York.
In 1993, they introduced a taller bottle, which they called the "Tall Boy." In 1995, they started making different kinds of sodas and root beers. They even introduced a new beer in 1996. However, by 1996, the company was selling less iced tea. In 1997, AriZona drinks started being sold in big national stores. That same year, they stopped making their fizzy soda drinks.
In 2020, AriZona started selling fruit snacks. These snacks came in flavors like mixed fruit, Arnold Palmer, and green tea. The company has kept the 99-cent price printed on many of its cans. This is true even though the cost of making the drinks has gone up. Stores can choose to set their own prices, and AriZona also makes cans without the price printed on them.
