Arjeplog is a small town in Sweden. It is located in the Lapland area. This is in the northern part of the country. In 2010, about 1,977 people lived there.

Arjeplog is a popular place for car companies. They test their new cars there in the winter. The town was even shown on the British TV show Top Gear.

In the past, Arjeplog offered money to people who moved there. Families could get 100,000 kronor. Individuals could get 25,000 kronor.

History of Arjeplog

The name Arjeplog comes from the Pite Sami words Árjepluovve. This name was first written down in 1636. It described a village of the Sami people.

The word pluovve means 'wet marsh'. The first part, Árje, comes from a word meaning 'ridge'. So, the name describes the land around the town.

Arjeplog is also known for its Silver Museum. A doctor named Einar Wallquist created it. The museum opened in 1965. It shows the history and culture of the Sami people.

In 1874, Arjeplog became a rural municipality. This means it was a local government area. Later, in 1971, it became part of the larger Arjeplog Municipality. Arjeplog town is the main center of this municipality.

Climate in Arjeplog

Arjeplog has a subarctic climate. This type of climate is common in northern Sweden. It means the winters are very cold and long. They also get a lot of snow.

The summers are short in Arjeplog. But they can sometimes be warm. The summers are also very bright. This is because Arjeplog is close to the Arctic Circle.

During summer, the midnight sun appears for about three weeks. This means the sun never fully sets. Even for longer periods, it does not get truly dark.

In winter, there is not much daylight. But Arjeplog does not have complete darkness. This is because it is just below the Arctic Circle. Daylight is limited to less than three hours during the shortest days.

Arjeplog is located on the lake of Hornavan. This lake freezes over every winter. The cold temperatures cause it to turn to ice. Even in summer, the lake water stays cool.
