Arkady Georgievich Andreasyan (born August 11, 1947 – died December 23, 2020) was a famous Armenian football player and coach. He played as a midfielder for Ararat Yerevan for most of his career. He also played for the Soviet Union national football team.
Andreasyan was a key player for the Ararat Yerevan team. They won the top Soviet football league, the Soviet Top League, in 1973. They also won the Soviet Cup in 1973 and 1975. He was part of the Soviet Union Olympic football team that won a bronze medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics.
Arkady Andreasyan received important awards for his sports achievements. He was named a Master of Sport of the USSR in 1971. In 1982, he became an Honoured Coach of the Armenian SSR. Later, in 2011, he received the Order For Merit to the Fatherland from Armenia. He also served as the manager of Ararat Yerevan.
Playing Career
Arkady Andreasyan was born in Baku, which was then part of the Azerbaijan SSR. His family was Armenian. He started learning football at the Neftchi Baku football school.
He began his senior playing career in 1965 with Shirak Leninakan. After one season, he joined Ararat Yerevan in 1966. He didn't play much in his first year with Ararat. So, he moved to Sevan Hoktemberyan for two seasons, from 1967 to 1968.
In 1969, Andreasyan returned to Ararat Yerevan. His first game back was on April 4, 1969, in Yerevan. They played against Dynamo Kyiv.
The 1970s were a golden age for Ararat Yerevan with Andreasyan as a main midfielder. The team won the 1973 Soviet Top League championship. They also won the Soviet Cup in both 1973 and 1975. These wins are still seen as some of the biggest moments in Armenian football history.
In the 1974–75 European Cup, Andreasyan scored a goal in a big 5-0 win against Cork Celtic. This helped Ararat Yerevan reach the quarterfinals. There, they faced Bayern Munich. Ararat lost the first game 0-2. But in the second game, played in Hrazdan Stadium in Yerevan, Andreasyan scored the only goal. Ararat Yerevan won that match 1-0. Even though Bayern Munich moved on to the next round and later won the European Cup, Ararat's performance was impressive.
Andreasyan stopped playing football professionally in 1978. He played a total of 242 matches for Ararat Yerevan and scored 62 goals.
International Career
Arkady Andreasyan first played for the Soviet Union Olympic football team on June 2, 1971. They won that match against the Netherlands 4-0.
He was part of the Soviet Olympic team that played in the 1972 Summer Olympics. In the bronze medal match, the Soviet team tied with East Germany. Because of the tie, both teams were awarded bronze medals.
Coaching Career
Andreasyan started his career as a football manager in 1979. Over the years, he coached several teams. These included Kotayk Abovyan, Ararat Yerevan, Spartak Hoktemberyan, Zvartnots Echmiadzin, Homenmen Beirut, and Mika Yerevan.
While Andreasyan was managing Ararat Yerevan, the team won the Armenian Cup in the 1996–97 season.
In 2009, Andreasyan became the Vice-President of Ararat Yerevan. He held this important role until he passed away in 2020. In March 2009, he also stepped in as the acting manager for Ararat when the previous manager left. He continued in this role for the rest of that year.
He officially became the manager of Ararat Yerevan again in March 2011. In February 2012, Andreasyan was replaced by Albert Safaryan as the team's manager.
Personal Life
Arkady Andreasyan came from a family deeply involved in football. His father, George Andreasyan, was also a football player. He played for Lokomotiv Baku and Dinamo Yerevan. His father later coached Lokomotiv Baku.
Arkady's uncle, Hayk Andriasyan, played for Lokomotiv Moscow. He also coached many Armenian teams.
Arkady Andreasyan was married and had a son named George. His son George also became a football player and played for several Armenian clubs, including Ararat Yerevan.
