History of Arlington
The area where Arlington now stands was first planned out in 1856. The name "Arlington" was officially chosen on May 11, 1858. This was the very same day that Minnesota became a state!
In the 1860s and 1870s, many German families came to Arlington. They came to homestead, which means they settled on and farmed land given by the government. Because of this, many people in Arlington today have German family backgrounds. Arlington officially became a city in 1948.

Arlington covers an area of about 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There are no large lakes or rivers within the city limits.
