The Armitage River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Chibougamau Lake. This lake is in the town of Chibougamau, which is part of the Nord-du-Québec region.
The river's path goes through areas called Lemoine and Dollier townships. You can reach the river's area by using a forest road. This road connects to Route 167, which also leads to Waconichi Lake.
The Armitage River usually freezes over in early November. It stays frozen until mid-May. It's generally safe to walk or travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.
River's Journey
The Armitage River starts at André Lake. This lake is about 1.7 kilometers long and sits at an elevation of 409 meters. From there, the river flows for about 26.7 kilometers.
Along its journey, the river flows through marshy areas. It also crosses a small, unnamed lake. The river then reaches the southern edge of Lemoine township.
One important part of its path is crossing Lake Armitage. This lake is about 9.1 kilometers long. After leaving Lake Armitage, the river continues northeast. It eventually reaches its mouth at Chibougamau Lake.
Where the River Ends
The Armitage River empties into "Girard Bay." This bay is an extension of the "Bay of Islands" in Chibougamau Lake. From where the Armitage River joins, the water flows west through this bay.
Chibougamau Lake is a very important lake. It is the main starting point for the Chibougamau River. The water from the Armitage River eventually joins a much larger river system.
The Bigger River System
After Chibougamau Lake, the water flows into Lac aux Dorés. Then it goes into the Chibougamau River. This river eventually meets the Opawica River.
From there, the water travels along the Waswanipi River. This river flows into Goéland Lake and then Matagami Lake. Finally, the water flows into the Nottaway River. The Nottaway River empties into Rupert Bay, which is part of James Bay.
Name Origin
The name "Armitage River" honors Reginald S. Armitage (1892-1955). He was an important person at a forestry company called Price Brothers Limited. Armitage was a pioneer who helped develop the natural resources in this region.
The name "Armitage River" became official on December 5, 1968. This was when the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec's place names commission) was founded.
