History of Armona
The name "Armona" was first used for a train station in the 1880s. Later, in 1891, the name was moved to its current spot along the Southern Pacific Railroad line. Some people believe the name "Armona" was created by switching the first two letters of the name "Ramona."
The first school in the Armona area was called Giddings School. It was built in 1880. The Giddings School District changed its name to Armona in 1907. A new school building made of brick was built in the early 1920s. However, this building didn't meet California's safety rules for earthquakes. So, it was replaced in 1953 with the building that is now Armona Elementary School.
