Armstrong is a small town in Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located along the Blue River. In 2020, about 113 people lived there. The town was named after Frank C. Armstrong. He was a member of the Dawes Commission, a group that helped divide land in the area.

History of Armstrong

The town of Armstrong started in 1872. It grew along the route of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. At that time, it was part of the Choctaw Nation.

Armstrong had a post office for a short time in 1882–1883. After that, mail went to a nearby town called Caddo. In 1896, a new post office opened in Armstrong. It stayed open until 1920. The post office was inside the town's only grocery store. The store owner was also the postmaster. In 1911, only 41 people lived in Armstrong.

Around 1916, the Oklahoma Office of the Game Warden opened a fish hatchery in the town. This office is now called the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Armstrong's economy mostly depended on local farms. It also served sport fishermen who came to the Blue River and nearby Lake Texoma.

The town's population changed over the years.

  • In 1980, there were 133 residents.
  • By 1990, the number dropped to 122.
  • It then rose to 141 in 2000.
  • In 2010, the population was 105.
  • By 2020, it had increased slightly to 113 people.
