The Army of Georgia was a special group of soldiers during the American Civil War. It was part of the Union army, which fought for the northern states. This army was the "Left Wing" of Major General William T. Sherman's larger army group. It played a key role in two important campaigns: the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign.

History of the Army of Georgia

During the Atlanta Campaign in 1864, General Sherman's main army was made of three parts. These were the Army of the Tennessee, the Army of the Cumberland, and the Army of the Ohio. After the city of Atlanta was captured in September 1864, Sherman changed his plans.

He sent some of his troops, like the Army of the Ohio, to fight other Confederate forces. Then, in November, he created the Army of Georgia. He combined two groups of soldiers, the XIV Corps and the XX Corps, from the Army of the Cumberland.

This new Army of Georgia was led by Major General Henry Warner Slocum. It became one of two main parts, or "wings," of Sherman's army. The other wing was the Army of the Tennessee, led by Oliver O. Howard.

The Army of Georgia marched across the South. It didn't face much fighting during the famous March to the Sea. However, it was heavily involved in later battles. These included the Battle of Averasborough and the tough Battle of Bentonville.
