The Arno is an important river in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is one of the main rivers in central Italy.
Where the Arno River Starts and Flows
The Arno river begins high up on Mount Falterona. This mountain is part of the Apennines, a mountain range in Italy. At first, the river flows towards the south. Near the city of Arezzo, it turns and starts flowing towards the west.
The Arno then travels through several famous Italian cities. It passes through Florence, Empoli, and Pisa. Finally, the river flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea at a place called Marina di Pisa. The Arno is about 241 kilometres (150 mi) long, making it the longest river in the Tuscany region.
The Great Flood of 1966
On November 4, 1966, a very big flood happened on the Arno river in Florence. The river's banks could not hold the water, and they broke. Sadly, many people lost their lives because of this flood.
The flood also caused huge damage to Florence. Millions of valuable works of art and rare books were damaged or even destroyed. Even 40 years later, many of these treasures had still not been fully restored. This shows how powerful and destructive nature can be.
