Arnside Knott is a lovely hill located near the village of Arnside in Cumbria, England. It stands at a height of 159 metres (522 ft) (about 522 feet) above sea level. Even though it's close to the famous Lake District, Arnside Knott is actually just outside the Lake District National Park. It sits south of the River Kent, which marks the park's boundary.
This special hill is part of the beautiful Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also owned and looked after by the National Trust, a charity that protects important places.
About Arnside Knott
Arnside Knott is a popular spot for walks and enjoying nature. From its top, you can see amazing views of the surrounding countryside and the sea. It's a great place to explore if you love being outdoors.
What is a Marilyn?
Arnside Knott is known for being the lowest "Marilyn" in England. But what exactly is a Marilyn? It's a special type of hill or mountain. To be called a Marilyn, a hill must rise at least 150 meters (about 492 feet) higher than the land around it. This height difference is called its "topographic prominence."
Think of it like this: if you were to fill the area around the hill with water until it just touched the lowest point connecting it to higher ground, the hill would still stick out by at least 150 meters. Arnside Knott was added to the official list of Marilyns in 2004–2005.
Nature and Wildlife
The National Trust helps manage the land at Arnside Knott. To keep the grass and plants healthy, they sometimes let Highland cattle graze there. These shaggy, strong cows are well-suited to the landscape and help maintain the natural environment. You might even spot them if you visit!
