Arnside is a lovely village in Cumbria, England. It used to be part of Westmorland and is close to Lancashire. The famous Lake District National Park is just a short distance north. Arnside is located near towns like Kendal, Ulverston, and Lancaster. Its population was about 2,334 people in 2011.
Arnside sits on the edge of the River Kent estuary, which flows into Morecambe Bay. It's part of a special area called the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The village is overlooked by Arnside Knott, a hill that rises right out of the estuary. This area is home to amazing wildlife, including red squirrels and otters. You might even spot a bittern, a type of bird, here!
People have enjoyed visiting Arnside since the 1800s. It's not a typical busy seaside resort. Instead, visitors come to enjoy the beautiful scenery and nature, especially Arnside Knott. It's like an early example of "eco-tourism," where people visit to appreciate the natural environment.

Exploring Arnside's History & Buildings
The oldest building in Arnside is Arnside Tower. This tower was built a long time ago, in the 1300s or 1400s. It was a strong building used as a safe place during raids from Scots and the Border Reivers.
Arnside used to have a golf club, which started in 1906. It closed during World War II. The old customs house, where taxes on goods used to be collected, is now home to the Sailing Club. Many buildings along the promenade (the walkway by the water) were built to welcome visitors.
Arnside Viaduct: A Railway Bridge
The railway line crosses the River Kent on a very long bridge called the Arnside Viaduct. It's about 552 yards (505 meters) long! It was first built in 1857 and then rebuilt in 1915 to make it stronger.
Getting Around Arnside
Arnside has its own train station, Arnside railway station. It's on the Furness line, which connects Arnside to many towns. You can travel by train to places like Lancaster, Barrow-in-Furness, Ulverston, and Carlisle. The train line goes right over the River Kent on the famous Arnside Viaduct.
Understanding Arnside's Tides

The coast of Arnside experiences very fast-rising tides with each high tide. This can be dangerous, so there are warning signs on the pier. An alarm also sounds before every high tide during the day. Here's how the warnings work:
- Eight siren sounds: About 2 hours and 15 minutes before high tide.
- Eight siren sounds: About 1 hour and 45 minutes before high tide.
- Twelve siren sounds: About 1 hour and 15 minutes before high tide. At this point, you can usually see the incoming tide from the Coastguard station.
This fast tide happens because Morecambe Bay is very wide but narrows quickly at Arnside. Also, the difference between high and low tide here is one of the biggest in the UK. This can create a "tidal bore," which is like a small wave that travels up the estuary. It can be about 12 inches (30 cm) high and is sometimes used by canoeists for fun!
